What's in a name?

The other day someone asked me how we choose names for our leotards.

We like to have some fun with this part of the design process. Naming our leotards is often done at the end of the process when all the designs are finished, but sometimes a name pops up spontaneously mid-way through, as it did with our new 2018 Early Release style, the Sofia. This deep V front leotard immediately brought to mind the iconic Italian actress Sophia Loren. She wasn’t shy to show her curves, and her name seemed to fit this style perfectly. We went with the original spelling of her name, Sofia (Costanza Brigida Villani Scicolone!).

Often we use the names of our team members here at AinslieWear. Last year, Rebecca had an “oh my gosh” moment when she discovered that we had attached her name to style 1022. Coincidentally, she then told us that it was her favourite number, as well as her wedding date of October 22! I love fun synchronicity like that!

We’ve also used the name of our Toronto retailer, Nadia, when naming our sexy long sleeve mesh leotard. Other times we’ve chosen friends, famous actresses, and ……well, we can’t give all the fun finds away!

But we’ll leave you with a few great quotes from Sofia Loren:

"A woman’s dress should be like a barbed-wire fence: serving its purpose without obstructing the view."

"Spaghetti can be eaten most successfully if you inhale it like a vacuum cleaner."

"Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful.
